The Piece

A free outline, drawn in metal.

The unyielding character of aluminium, shaped into a bold, sculptural form.

ROCK Armchair is the work of the Italian design brand DA A Italia and Marc Sadler, a designer who has spent his career testing what materials and manufacturing processes can do.

A frame that brings together square and round aluminium tubes. An embossed aluminium seat, fixed with rivets. Nothing industrial about the materials or the construction is hidden; instead, it becomes the substance of the form.

And yet it remains, above all, a chair to be sat in, with an ergonomic backrest that supports the body.

Behind ROCK Armchair lies the metalworking know-how rooted in Salento, in Italy's far south, and a way of designing that refuses to be bound by convention.

Offered in a wide range of colours and finishes, it can settle quietly into a room or become the accent that draws every eye.

A piece of furniture — and, at the same time, a sculptural object that gives a space its character.

    An aluminium frame

Frame and seat alike are aluminium — a chair DA A Italia makes for use indoors and outdoors.

  2. 02

    Square and round tubes

Two tube profiles, square and round, combine in one frame. Where straight lines meet curves, the outline changes with every angle.

  3. 03

    An ergonomic backrest

The softly rounded backrest seems to float on two slender posts. DA A Italia describes it as ergonomic.

    A riveted seat

An aluminium seat edged with a line of rivets. As the light moves, its shifting shadows give the hard face of the metal a quiet depth.

    Finish and texture

Finishes range from smooth and textured paints to Ultra Matt. Up close, even the fine grain of the painted surface is visible.

In Space

In the space

Indoors or out. On a terrace or in a garden, ROCK Armchair holds its outline clearly against the light.

Brand & Designer

DA A Italia & Marc Sadler

Brand

DA A Italia

Founded in Lecce, in the Salento region of southern Italy, in 2014. DA A Italia began as an encounter between furniture design and heavy engineering — the processes used to build the buckets, arms and frames of earth-moving machines.

Bending, welding, finishing: industrial capacity meets the skill of the hand, and a rich heritage of metal craftsmanship is reimagined through a contemporary lens. Handcrafted finishes give every piece its own character.

Designer

Marc Sadler

Born in Austria, a French citizen and Italian by adoption. One of the first graduates in industrial aesthetics from ENSAD in Paris, he pioneered material experimentation and the cross-pollination of technologies.

In the early 1970s he developed the first ski boot made entirely of recyclable thermoplastic. From sports equipment, where new materials and processes are explored every day, he carried that knowledge into lighting and furniture. He has won the ADI Compasso d'Oro four times.

A brand that carried the techniques of heavy engineering into furniture, and a designer who has always started from materials and processes. In the tubular frame of ROCK Armchair and its exposed rivets, the two perspectives meet.
